Jammu, Jan 06: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, assured on Monday that the introduction of a direct rail link to Kashmir would not affect Jammu’s economy, but rather bring benefits to the region.
Speaking during the inaugural ceremony of the Jammu Railway Division, Omar Abdullah said, “Jammu will not face any economic drawbacks from the direct rail link to Kashmir. In fact, it will benefit from the Kashmir Rail Link.”
He emphasized that the new Jammu Railway Division is expected to create jobs, boost trade, and enhance tourism in J&K.
“The establishment of this division will provide significant employment opportunities for the local population, especially in the railway sector,” Omar added, while also thanking Prime Minister Modi for granting Jammu its own railway division.
Omar further explained, “Jammu will not suffer any economic losses from the new rail link to Kashmir. On the contrary, it will benefit immensely from it.”
He described the moment as historic for Jammu and Kashmir, noting that the people of Jammu have long advocated for their own railway division. “Today, that dream has been realized,” Omar said.
The Chief Minister stressed that the new rail connectivity would strengthen Jammu’s economy, saying, “We expect a significant surge in trade and tourism, and we will ensure that Jammu benefits fully from this development.”
Omar also highlighted the recruitment opportunities the new railway division would bring. “With control and coordination now centered in Jammu, local recruitment will be a priority. This will provide much-needed employment for our youth and boost the local economy,” he stated.
Additionally, Omar noted that the inauguration included the connection of the Srinagar-Katra rail line, which he said would revolutionize travel in the region. He pointed out that this new connectivity would address long-standing issues such as disruptions in winter flights and high airfare.
