Srinagar, Jan 15: Asserting upon the strict clampdown on drug traders and those disrupting peace in UT, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, RR Swain on Monday said that the battle against drugs is not directed at the general public but specifically targets individuals engaged in the drug trade and those attempting to disrupt the peaceful environment.
Talking to media at a public darbar in Kupwara, the police chief said the significance of public collaboration in successfully combating the drug menace and confronting the masterminds behind this illicit trade.
He stressed the need for a united effort to prevail in the war against drugs and to thwart the activities of those promoting drug trade.
“We recognize the paramount importance of public cooperation, and my officers consistently emphasize this to me. By acting responsibly and respectfully with the public, we foster a relationship of trust, ensuring their cooperation in all situations,” DGP Swain said.
Highlighting the nuanced approach taken by the police force, he mentioned the distinction made between the masterminds orchestratinanujg the drug trade and those acting as pawns on the ground.
“Our officers stress the indispensable nature of people’s cooperation, acknowledging that the police function as a service. We express gratitude to the public for their unwavering support, and this sentiment is not mere lip service but a sincere acknowledgment from the depths of my heart, recognizing the pivotal role of public cooperation,” the police chief said.
The DGP Swain also said that police Special Police Officers (SPOs) are part of the police family and they understand their issues as well.
“We always try to provide help to SPOs, their families, and children through different welfare schemes and scholarships of the police and also try to induct them under regular police, which we have also done on various occasions,” he said.
DGP Swain said those SPOs, who work tirelessly are being promoted from time to time in regular police. It is a separate scheme and to converge them in the police department, it is the domain of the government. Our officers are always worried about SPOs and their concerns,” he said.
Addressing the public darbar, DGP Swain said it marks the inaugural instance of conducting the grievance redressal program at the district level, moving away from the usual station headquarters setting.
“The objective is to offer assistance to the public and address their concerns effectively through such initiatives, recognizing the myriad challenges people encounter,” he added.
DGP Swain said police matters include housing, medical challenges, education, and concerns of martyred families. We are trying our best to resolve these issues. Issues related to policing, and investigations can be done at the earliest, he said.
Earlier on Sunday DGP Swain advised officers and Jawans of J&K Police in Kupwara to provide exemplary police services. The importance of working closely with the public and maintaining a robust system of accountability, transparency, and contributing to the delivery of justice for those seeking assistance, he added.
DGP Swain underscored the significant responsibilities carried by Jammu and Kashmir Police. As the primary law enforcement agency in the region, the force is entrusted with upholding public safety, maintaining law and order, and delivering high-quality policing services to the community.
He stressed the commitment required to safeguard and promote the overall well-being of society, acknowledging the immense responsibility placed on the shoulders of J&K Police. The DGP called for tireless efforts in protecting citizens against violence, crime, and other nefarious activities, ensuring that the law is applied fairly and equally to all.
