Srinagar, Dec 17: Despite the allocation of funds by the Smargha Shiksha Department School Education for setting up all eight girls hostels in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district, the construction of three hostels remains stalled causing an inordinate delay in making them operational.
In 2018, the Samagra Shiksha school education department released funds for the establishment of eight girls’ hostels in different areas of the district that include Budgam, Beerwah, BK Pora, Narbal, Khag, Khansahib, and Sursyar. Each hostel was designed to accommodate 100 beds, with a total allocation of Rs 306 lacs for the facility. Construction of five hostels—located in Budgam, Narbal, Nagam, Khansahib, and BK Pora—has been completed and they have been officially handed over to the school education department.
Local residents from Beerwah, Khag, and Sursyar told the Rising Kashmir that construction of the girls’ hostels commenced promptly following government approval.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the construction work couldn’t be completed. With the result, these three hostels remained non-functional,” they said.
An official from the School Education Department said that the funds for the construction of the eight girls’ hostels have already been disbursed.
“Construction of five girls’ hostels has been completed and handed over to the School Education Department. However, the remaining three hostels in Beerwah, Khag and Sursyar have not yet been fully completed and are yet to be handed over to the school education department by the R&B Division of Chadoora and Budgam,” he said.
