Ganderbal, Apr 23: During the commemoration of World Book Day, Manzoor Ahmad, the Chief Librarian of Government Degree College Kangan in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, emphasized the detrimental effects of excessive social media usage on one’s health and urged students to prioritize library education.
Ahmad highlighted the invaluable resources available in libraries, emphasizing the enriching quality of education found in books. He expressed concern over the increasing trend of students spending significant time on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, which he deemed harmful to their well-being.
“While social media has its merits in knowledge acquisition, mindless scrolling serves no purpose,” Ahmad remarked, stressing the importance of utilizing libraries as hubs for academic growth.
Professor Waseem Ahmad echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing World Book Day’s role in fostering creativity and storytelling skills among students.
Seerat Rafeeq, a student at Government Degree College Kangan, lauded the support she received from the library in her preparation for the UPSC examination, underscoring the indispensable role of books in knowledge acquisition.
The college’s commitment to enhancing literary resources, including monthly magazines and leading newspapers like Rising Kashmir, was also highlighted by the Seerat Rafeek. She emphasized the day’s significance in instilling a lifelong passion for reading among us.
Principal Sadaf of GDC Kangan stated, “Celebrating books encourages a passion for reading. By dedicating a day to this celebration, students are inspired to delve into various genres, uncover new authors, and nurture a lifelong devotion to reading.”
As the world celebrates World Book Day, the message resonates clear: libraries remain invaluable sanctuaries of knowledge, offering an antidote to the perils of social media addiction.
