The Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday announced the deployment of Inter-Ministerial Central Teams to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab to assess the scale of destruction caused by torrential rains, flash floods, cloudbursts and landslides this monsoon.
Each team will be headed by a Joint Secretary-level officer from the MHA or the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and will include senior representatives from the Ministries of Expenditure, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Jal Shakti, Power, Road Transport & Highways and Rural Development.
Officials said the teams will carry out on-the-spot reviews of damages and relief work being undertaken by the respective State and UT administrations. The move draws from a standing directive issued by Home Minister Amit Shah in 2019, which requires such teams to be dispatched immediately after severe disasters, without waiting for formal memoranda from affected States.
Alongside the deployment, the MHA said the Centre has released substantial funds for disaster response in 2025-26. A total of Rs 10,498.80 crore has been transferred to 24 States under the State Disaster Response Fund. Rs 1,988.91 crore has been released from the National Disaster Response Fund to 12 States, Rs 3,274.90 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund to 20 States, and Rs 372.09 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund to nine States.
Reiterating its support, the Ministry said the Central Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi “stands shoulder-to-shoulder with States affected by natural calamities in mitigating hardships faced by the people.”
