Kulgam, Jun 10: A butcher has been arrested and his establishment sealed after being suspected of selling dead animal meat in Kulgam town on Monday.
Bilal Ahmad, Tehsildar Kulgam, told Rising Kashmir that with the upcoming Eid ul Adha, they have intensified market inspections following the directions of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam.
He said that a team has been formed in the tehsil to conduct inspections from shop to shop, ensuring there are no violations of any norms, including the Commodities Act or other Food Safety regulations.
“We penalize shopkeepers found violating any norms or regulations and seal the shop if severe violations are found,” he said.
He said that Kulgam Town has a slaughterhouse where slaughtering is done under official supervision. Tehsildar said that they had received several local complaints about a mutton seller not slaughtering at the designated place.
“The team, which includes Revenue, Police, Food Safety, Municipality, and a veterinary surgeon and sheep surgeon, visited the shop and found that the quality of the meat was not proper. Consequently, we sealed the establishment and arrested the accused,” he said.
Tehsildar Kulgam urged people to check if the meat they are buying in town has the official stamp from the slaughterhouse. Meat butchered at the slaughterhouse carries a seal mark.
“People should verify the seal mark before purchasing. We also have a veterinary surgeon or sheep surgeon at the slaughterhouse who signs a certificate, which people can check as well.”
He assured that the administration will ensure people receive meat and other essential commodities of good quality and at notified rates. He added that people should call the Control Room at 91034 24365 in case of any violation or grievance.
