Budgam, Aug 06: Education Minister Sakina Itoo has announced the formation of committees to investigate the tragic incident in Ichagam, where one student lost his life and another was hospitalized. She assured that those found responsible will face strict departmental action.
On July 5, 2025, two students from the Ichgam area, enrolled at Government Higher Secondary School Ichgam, were electrocuted after reportedly leaving school grounds to swim in a spring near a local mosque. One student tragically died, while the other remains in critical condition and is being monitored at SKIMS Soura Hospital in Srinagar.
Speaking to reporters here, Itoo said, “Following the directives of Chief Minister Abdullah, I visited Ichagam village, where I met the family of the student who lost his life in the incident. Both my party and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned this tragedy. The family is experiencing profound grief, as the deceased was their only son. We stand with the family during these challenging times.”
She said such an incident should never occur. However, it has happened, and it is the responsibility of the school authorities to explain why students were allowed to leave the school premises during school hours, she said.
“Following this incident, I have instructed the authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry. This inquiry must be transparent and fair, ensuring a comprehensive report is produced,” Itoo said
The minister added that she has requested the ADC Budgam to initiate an inquiry into the Power Development Department. “Once both the School Education Department and Power Development Department investigations are complete, any individuals found guilty will face strict legal action,” she said.
“I have already informed the family that appropriate actions will be taken against any employees found guilty once the inquiry reports are submitted, so that justice can be delivered to the affected families,” Sakina said.
