Pathankot, Sept 24: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office (JKBO), organized a two-day training program for mentors of Standards Clubs and science teachers from Pathankot and Gurdaspur. Over 100 participants attended the event. Tilak Raj, Director BIS-JKBO, emphasized the importance of integrating the “Learning Science via Standards” (LSVS) initiative into school curricula to make science education more practical and engaging. Along with Kamal Jeet Ghai, Ex-Joint Director CIPET, resource persons Monika Sharma and Naira Noor provided insights into BIS activities, standardization, and certification schemes.
The highlight of the second day was a visit to the Chenab Textile Mills in Kathua district. Participants received hands-on exposure to various testing processes and the entire manufacturing cycle of yarn. The Quality Manager at the mill provided a detailed demonstration of quality assurance procedures, from raw material processing to final product testing. This practical experience allowed the mentors and science teachers to see first-hand how scientific principles are applied in industrial settings, enhancing their understanding of standards in a real-world context.
In addition, participants delivered group presentations showcasing how scientific laws can be applied to everyday products. These presentations helped reinforce the educational objectives of the program by linking theoretical knowledge to practical demonstrations.
Standard Promotion Officer, Ashish Kumar Dwivedi, discussed the management and future of Standards Clubs, emphasizing their role in promoting a quality revolution among students. Rajeshwar Singh Salaria, Key Resource Person BIS, encouraged the mentors to organize similar programs in their schools, fostering a culture of quality and standards awareness among students.
The event concluded with the distribution of participation certificates by Jas Kant Singh, Principal of Government Higher Secondary School (Boys) Dinanagar, who lauded BIS for the initiative. Seven schools were also felicitated for their outstanding work in 2023-24 with mementos and certificates of appreciation from BIS Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office.
