Zojila Pass, May 21: The Zojila High Altitude Marathon marked a significant milestone in the world of extreme sports, with 16 determined athletes conquering the treacherous terrain from Sonamarg to Gumri. This challenging event, held in spine-chilling conditions, showcased the indomitable human spirit and the drive to achieve the extraordinary.

Inspiration for this grueling marathon came from the remarkable feat of four members of the Badamwari Athletes—Suhail Khan, Kota Zahid, Sheikh Imran, and Abrar—who braved the harsh winter of 2024 to complete the run. Their achievement ignited the ambitions of many others, culminating in the marathon held on May 19.

Among the 16 participants, 14-year-old Ziyan Afaq Mir stood out as the youngest competitor, displaying exceptional determination and resilience. Additionally, three daring athletes—Mudasir Bashir Shah, Tiger Afaq Ahmad, and Kota Zahid—went beyond the half marathon, completing the full marathon despite the challenging high-altitude conditions.

This event was not just a test of physical endurance but also a testament to the essential support and teamwork. The back-end support team, comprising Ishfaq Bhat, Ahmadminza, Degloo Aaqib, and Shuyab Sufi, played a crucial role in ensuring the athletes were well-hydrated and supported at critical junctions throughout the course.

The marathon was flagged off by Bilal Beigh and Jalal Jeelani, who also participated, boosting the morale of all runners. Their leadership and encouragement were pivotal in the successful execution of this event.

The Zojila High Altitude Marathon exemplifies the spirit of dreaming big and pushing beyond comfort zones. It reinforces the message that with self-belief and perseverance, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
