Srinagar, May 10: Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday urged the people to take charge of initiating a transformation in Jammu and Kashmir. He underscored the vital necessity of abolishing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the region, citing it as a critical step towards fostering lasting peace and stability.
Addressing a public meeting in the Chackipahroo area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, Azad criticised the past administrations, including the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the “unjust” detention of individuals under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the fake encounters. He revealed his personal investigations during his tenure as chief minister, which he said, uncovered cases of innocent civilians being falsely implicated as militants.
He said, “If the government claims there is normalcy, they should revoke AFSPA. Also, many youths were detained under PSA during NC, PDP rule. When I became chief minister, a deputation of vegetable vendors and their families met me, claiming that those who were killed were innocent, falsely portrayed as militants by the police. Upon investigation, the truth emerged that they were indeed innocent, and I ensured that the responsible officers were put behind bars. If my government comes to power, I will never exploit the people and will ensure justice.”
The DPAP Chief referred to a video where a former chief minister was confronted by citizens over unfulfilled commitments, indicating a growing dissatisfaction among the electorate. He emphasised the importance of track records and tangible results in governance and challenged the notion that regional parties only deceive the public. “My administration’s actions speak louder than words,” he said.
Azad cited numerous initiatives undertaken during his tenure aimed at uplifting the underprivileged and fostering development. One notable achievement Azad highlighted was the construction of the Hajj House in Srinagar within a record time of six months, which he said showcased the efficiency and dedication of his administration.
He stressed the imperative to cease exploiting people through hollow slogans. “Citizens are craving authentic transformation, development and tranquillity,” he said.
The former CM lamented the regional parties’ history of “duping” Kashmiris, pointing to their indecisiveness from advocating autonomy to self-rule, and now “fixating” on Article 370.
Reflecting on his solitary stand in Parliament against the abrogation of Article 370, Azad contrasted it with the reticence and abstentions of select regional MPs. He called for electing candidates who prioritise public issues and endorsed Amir Bhatt, a candidate from DPAP, as someone who would echo the people’s concerns in Parliament.
Among others present on the occasion were Chief Spokesperson Salman Nizami, Working President Budgam Bilal Khan, District President Gh Nabi Parwana and others.
