Srinagar, Apr 19: In a heartwarming display of commitment to democracy, newly married couples in Udhampur and Bhaderwah districts of Jammu and Kashmir turned heads as they arrived at polling stations dressed in their wedding finery to exercise their right to vote.
Despite the festivities of their wedding ceremonies, these couples, with a sense of civic responsibility, made it a point to cast their votes on their special day, sending a powerful message about the importance of participating in the electoral process.
Radhika Sharma, accompanied by her groom Sahil Sharma, adorned in traditional wedding attire, expressed their dedication to voting, stating, “Even amidst our wedding celebrations, voting remains our top priority. It is our moral responsibility to contribute to the democratic process and ensure our voices are heard.”
In a similar vein, Rakesh Thakur and Shardha Devi from Bunjwah of District Kishtwar also made it a point to cast their votes at the polling station on their wedding day.
“Even though it is our big day, we understand the importance of voting. It is our duty to shape the future, “Rakesh said.
He said that everyone should vote and not waste it. We want to ensure we are contributing to the betterment of our society, starting with exercising our right to vote.
Inspired by the impactful Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign, Sagadev Singh, along with his bride went straight to their polling station to cast their votes.
He said even on their wedding day, voting is important to us. Our vote today is a small but significant step towards building the future we dream of for ourselves and our children, Singh said.
Earlier on Friday, amid rain, polling began in Udhampur constituency in 2,637 polling stations in the districts of Udhampur, Kathua, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar.
The second phase of LokSabha elections will be held on April 26, third phase on May 7, the fourth phase on May 13, fifth phase on May 20, sixth phase on May 25 and the seventh phase on June 1, 2024.
