Jammu, Apr 16: In a step towards making India a “world-class semiconductor-producing nation”, the Indian Institute of Technology Jammu (IIT Jammu) launched the regional chapter of the VLSI Society of India (VSI) on Sunday. This is the third chapter of the ten, scheduled to be launched in India.
“The launch of the regional chapter aims at Research, Technology, Products, Manufacturing, Talent Development, and Skilling,” the institute said in a statement. “The VSI aims to transition the nation from being a semiconductor-consuming to a semiconductor-producing nation. Over the last 38 years, it has fostered the Semiconductor and VLSI eco-system by bringing in technocrats and luminaries under one canopy for research, technology, products, manufacturing, and skill development through global events like VLSID & VDAT with VLSI Design Conference.”
The chapter launch saw authorities put forward their ideas to enhance Chip Design and Manufacturing industry in our country based on the “Make in India” initiative. During the inaugural session, the sequential addresses were given by the chief guest Saurabh Bhagat, IAS, Commissioner/Secretary to Govt., Science & Technology Department, J&K; and Prof. Manoj Singh Gaur, Director of IIT Jammu. The presence of President (VSI), Dr Satya Gupta; Director (IIT Mandi), Prof Laxmidhar Behera; Director (Govt. affairs), Texas Instruments (TI), Mr Rajeev Khushu; and Scientist-E (MeitY) and Director (Technology) at India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), Mr Nishit Gupta, glorified the event.
The draw of the ceremony was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government of Jammu & Kashmir and IIT Jammu. This MoU will enable the faculty at IIT Jammu to undertake research projects in various thrust areas, including Battery Management, Electric Vehicles, Energy, VLSI, and more.
The signing of the MoU was followed by the keynote talks of Rajeev Khushu and Nishit Gupta. Dr Ambika Prasad Shah, Assistant Professor (IIT Jammu), gave the briefing on the activities that will be performed under the VSI Himalayan region chapter.
