Bandipora, Apr 17: A sudden flooding at the Wular Lake in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Monday morning resulted in the death of seventy sheep, with many more still missing.
As per the locals, the abrupt rainfall in the vicinity of Wular Lake caused a flash flood, which subsequently resulted in the loss of seventy sheep.
Talking to reporters, Ghulam Qadir, a shepherd, said they were on a dry patch of land with their livestock when an unexpected flood arose at approximately 07:30 am, sweeping away a total of 150 sheep, of which 70 were later found dead.
Qadir said that his son and nephew successfully evaded danger by climbing up trees, and they were subsequently rescued by the locals via boat.
Dr. Showkat Ahanger, District Sheep Husbandry Officer Bandipora, told Rising Kashmir that approximately 57 sheep had been found dead upon his visit to the spot.
He said the department has reached out to the relevant authorities regarding compensation, and that the revenue team has acknowledged the incident.
Meanwhile, the district administration of Bandipora issued an advisory for the general public to avoid moving around and taking livestock around water bodies.
