Jammu, Aug 06: With an alarming surge in cardiac-related health issues among rural women and significant limitations in accessing healthcare, Dr. Sushil Sharma, Head of the Department of Cardiology at GMCH Jammu, took a proactive step by organizing a day-long Cardiac Awareness cum Health Check-up camp. The event was conducted at the Shiv Temple in Village Kangrail, located in the Tehsil Bhalwal District of Jammu.
Recognizing the pressing need to address the escalating rates of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in rural women, Dr. Sushil Sharma’s camp targeted this vulnerable demographic, particularly women in the younger age groups. The camp aimed not only to create awareness but also to educate women about adopting heart-healthy lifestyles, thus securing a healthier future for generations to come. The initiative also aimed to reduce the substantial social and economic burdens imposed by cardiac illnesses.
Dr. Sushil Sharma emphasized that cardiovascular diseases have emerged as the leading cause of mortality among rural women. The camp underscored the importance of lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity and improved nutrition, in lowering CVD risks. Studies have indicated that women in rural settings face a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases due to factors like limited access to healthcare, lack of healthy food options, and higher obesity rates.
In his interactions with the local community, Dr. Sushil Sharma shed light on the gender-specific disparities in cardiovascular health. He stressed that despite significant progress, disparities still persist in terms of research, treatment, and preventive efforts for women’s heart health. He urged for more attention to be paid to addressing these gaps in knowledge and healthcare delivery to achieve gender equity in heart health.
Dr. Sushil Sharma highlighted the need for tailored interventions that consider cultural beliefs and life circumstances of women. Educating women about the importance of dietary choices was deemed vital for cardiovascular health. However, the lack of resources and access to nutritionists in rural areas often hampers effective education and implementation.
Prominent members of the community, including Dr. Shallu Sharma (Sarpanch), Subhash Chander (Panch), and others, commended Dr. Sushil Sharma’s efforts to raise awareness about cardiac health in rural settings. The event saw the participation of medical professionals and volunteers, all united in their mission to spread awareness and ensure better heart health for rural women.
In a region grappling with limited healthcare access, Dr. Sushil Sharma’s Cardiac Awareness cum Health Check-up camp stood as a beacon of hope, advocating for improved heart health among rural women. The event underscored the need for targeted interventions, increased awareness, and enhanced access to healthcare to effectively address the growing challenges of cardiovascular diseases in rural communities.
