Baramulla, Nov 02: Residents of Chakrodey Khan area in Sopore town of north Kashmir, staged a protest on Thursday due to severe water scarcity in their area.
They accused the Jal Shakti department of failing to provide them with drinking water from the last several years.
Mostly women, the protesting residents blocked the Mandi-Sopore Road, raising anti-Jal Shakti slogans.
They claimed that they have been without drinking water for the past several years.
A woman protester alleged that the Jal Shakti department has failed to address their long-pending demand.
According to the protesting residents, they have been experiencing a critical shortage of drinking water for several years, and despite their complaints, the concerned departments have not resolved the issue.
They claimed that the absence of clean drinking water has forced them to consume unhygienic water, leading to serious health concerns.
In response to the water crisis, the agitated residents blocked the busy Sopore – Fruit Mandi road, causing traffic jams.
However, the traffic situation was swiftly restored after police intervention.
The residents made an appeal to the authorities, urging them to address the water scarcity issue promptly to provide relief to the affected villagers.
The officials of Jal Shakti department however said that the water is depleting in main sources, leading to the shortage.
“The lack of rainfall has resulted in diminished water flow in rivers and streams that typically provide a lifeline to the area. The water level is diminishing day by day with no rains around,” an official of Jal Shakti said.
Subsequently, Jal Shakti officials assured them that a water tanker would be sent to the area daily and pledged to investigate the long-standing issue.
