Srinagar’s 1.5 million residents to benefit from Rangil Water Supply Project

Srinagar, Mar 18: In a major step toward securing clean and uninterrupted drinking water for Srinagar’s 1.5 million residents, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department has finalized a Rs 161 crore proposal for the Rangil Water Supply Plant.
The ambitious project Rangil-Preng Water Supply Scheme- is aimed at bolstering the city’s water infrastructure, now awaits approval from the Housing and Urban Development Department (HUDD) before implementation. As per the Census 2011, Srinagar is a city of 1.5 million people.
Chief Engineer PHE Kashmir, Braham Jyoti Sharma, while speaking to Rising Kashmir, confirmed that the department is ready to proceed once the necessary approvals are in place. “This project will significantly enhance the city’s drinking water supply, addressing long-standing shortages and improving overall distribution,” he said.
To ensure access to safe drinking water, the government has established water testing laboratories in every district. Some of these labs have already received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), while others are in the process of certification. “People can now test water before consumption to ensure its safety and quality,” Sharma said.
Concerns over a prolonged dry spell, which saw an 83 percent rainfall deficit in February, have been eased by substantial precipitation in March. This turnaround has replenished water sources, alleviating fears of severe shortages in the summer months.
With the Rangil Water Supply Project set to reshape the city’s drinking water infrastructure and enhanced testing facilities ensuring quality, Srinagar is on the path to a more secure and sustainable water future.
