Srinagar, Feb 13: Devotees across Kashmir observed the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Baraat with night-long prayers, seeking forgiveness and blessings from Allah. The holy night, which falls on the 14th and 15th of Sha’ban in the Islamic calendar, was filled with devotion as hundreds gathered at masjids, shrines, and graveyards for spiritual reflection and worship.
Religious places were vibrant, echoing with the recitation of the Quran. Masjids and shrines were beautifully adorned, while religious bodies and masjid management committees organised special functions, including Naat and Hamd. The night provided an opportunity for repentance, prayers, and supplications for peace, unity, and prosperity for the entire Muslim Ummah.
At the historic Hazratbal Shrine, one of the largest gatherings of devotees took place. Shrines like Khankah-e-Moulla, Makhdoom Sahib, Peer Dastgeer Sahib, and Chrar-e-Sharief were also filled with worshippers who offered special prayers throughout the night. Many visited graveyards to offer Fateh-Khani and prayed for the peace of departed souls.
Religious scholars delivered sermons, reflecting on the teachings of Islam and the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). “Shab-e-Baraat is a significant night to reconnect with Allah and remember our loved ones,” said Shabir Ahmad, a devotee at Hazratbal Shrine. “We pray for the well-being of the community and seek guidance for a better life.”
The night was also marked by prayers at Ziyarat-e-Sharief Khiram Kabamarg, Aishmuqam, Bijbehara, and other places, with devotees coming together in a spirit of unity and devotion.
Authorities ensured cleanliness around the religious sites. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) deployed extra staff to clean the areas and provide assistance throughout the night. “We made sure the surroundings were clean and our teams were available to help throughout the night,” an SMC official said.
However, the authorities ‘disallowed’ Shab-e-Baraat congregation prayers at the historic Jama Masjid. In a statement issued on Thursday evening, the Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid informed that after Asr prayers, the gates of Jama Masjid Srinagar were abruptly closed, and police personnel asked worshippers to vacate the mosque premises. “The Auqaf was further informed that the observance of Shab-e-Baraat would not be permitted at the Jama Masjid,” the Anjuman Auqaf said.

LG, CM greet people on occasion of Shab-e-Baraat
Jammu, Feb 13: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the Chief Minister extended his greetings to the people on the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Baraat.
In a message, the Lieutenant Governor said: “On this sacred occasion of Shab-e-Baraat, I convey my greetings and best wishes to all. The auspicious night provides opportunity to the devotees to seek forgiveness and blessings from the almighty. The holy night reminds us to follow the path of truth, humility, compassion and righteousness. It is also a sacred occasion to reaffirm our responsibility towards the underprivileged sections of the society. I pray for peace, happiness and joy for everyone”.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has extended his warm greetings to the people on the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Barat, the sacred night dedicated to seeking forgiveness, mercy and blessings from Almighty Allah.
In his message, the Chief Minister highlighted the spiritual significance of Shab-e-Barat, emphasizing that it is a night of introspection and prayer when Muslims seek divine pardon and guidance.
He urged people to embrace the spiritual essence of the occasion and pray for the well-being of all humanity.
The Chief Minister also prayed for peace, prosperity and progress to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
