Srinagar, Feb 04: Jammu and Kashmir has been approved for 71 market infrastructure projects under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
The projects has been launched to improve the marketing and storage facilities for horticulture produce, benefiting farmers across the Union Territory.
The MIDH scheme focuses on developing mandis, retail markets, vending carts, and storage infrastructure to strengthen the horticulture sector.
The 71 approved projects in J&K are part of a national effort to enhance horticulture infrastructure and support farmers by providing better market access. These projects are expected to help reduce post-harvest losses, improve supply chains, and ensure farmers get better prices for their produce.
Jammu and Kashmir has been allocated Rs 90.99 crore under the MIDH scheme for 2024-25, out of which Rs 20.5 crore has already been released, and Rs 15 crore has been utilised so far.
The funding for these projects is based on the Annual Action Plan (AAP) submitted by the Union Territory. Every year, funds are allocated depending on the available resources and specific needs of each state and Union Territory.
Over the years, J&K has received significant financial support under MIDH. In 2014-15, Rs 60 crore was allocated, out of which Rs 45 crore was released, but only Rs 20.13 crore was utilised. In 2016-17, J&K received Rs 96.09 crore, and Rs 104.2 crore was utilised. Similarly, in 2021-22, Rs 35 crore was allocated, but Rs 70 crore was utilised.
Under the MIDH scheme, market infrastructure projects in J&K are implemented through Self Help Groups (SHGs), Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs), local bodies, and Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) which play an important role in ensuring that funds are used efficiently to improve market storage, transportation, and direct selling options for farmers.
The government has been working closely with these organizations to ensure that horticulture products reach the markets in better condition, reducing losses and improving farmer incomes.
