Leh, Jan 23: In a historic announcement, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr.) BD Mishra (Retd.), declared ice hockey as the official sport of the Union Territory of Ladakh. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG), currently being hosted in Ladakh from January 23 to 27.
Addressing a large gathering of athletes, officials, and sports enthusiasts, the LG expressed pride in the UT’s rich ice hockey heritage. He stated, “Ice hockey is more than a sport in Ladakh; it is a part of our culture and identity. From today onwards, ice hockey will be recognised as the official sport of Ladakh.”
The announcement received enthusiastic applause, symbolizing the significance of the sport in the high-altitude region, where frozen lakes and ponds naturally serve as ice rinks during winter. Ice hockey has long been a popular winter activity in Ladakh, with the region producing national and international-level players.
The Khelo India Winter Games, which showcase a variety of winter sports including ice hockey, skiing, and figure skating, have further elevated Ladakh’s status as a hub for winter sports. The LG also encouraged youth participation in sports and highlighted the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and provide greater opportunities for athletes.
