Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed enormous challenges over the last thirty five years due to challenges faced by the cross –border terrorism imposed on it. This led to the degradation and destabilisation in the various areas of public life. The worst affected area has been the education that witnessed downslide .The students and their parents preferred the outside colleges and universities for education. But it goes to the credit of the teaching fraternity of Jammu and Kashmir who upheld the standard of education and research in the universities and colleges. This has its own effect as it led to the restoration of faith in the institutions of Jammu and Kashmir. University of Jammu is a glaring example of this feat. It has managed to uphold the quality education and research by maintaining the standard that is required for the accreditation as defined by the NAAC guidelines. The Rising Kashmir has analysed the performance of the University of Jammu while the NAAC peer team was on a visit to assess the performance of the university and its off site campuses at Kathua and Bhaderwah in its editorials earlier this month. The objective was to underline the challenges that need to be met by the University of Jammu to emerge as the leader in providing the quality education with the best possible teachers at its disposal and end the contractual mechanism that is leading to wastage and exploitation of the best teaching brains who are striving hard to serve this institution of repute. As per the reports the NAAC peer team has interacted with the teachers both permanent and the contractual in the offsite campuses to assess their problems. Moreover, they have taken the comprehensive stock of the infrastructural issues and the problems related to the availability of the funds for the campus development. It is a matter of pride for the entire Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir that the University of Jammu has undergone a considerable improvement over its past grading and has achieved a milestone by getting A++ grade in the NAAC accreditation(Cycle IV) with an outstanding CGPA score of 3.72 on 4 point scale. It is a matter of celebration for all the stakeholders. For this improvement and achieving this milestone Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu needs to be applauded. He has been rightly given an extension for another period and rightly so. He has a task cut out. That is to make the University of Jammu a university of comprehensive excellence. He has to script a new mission for the University of Jammu and transform it into a model university that is already trying to do. He must ensure that the quality of education must reach a new high with the recruitment of right teachers with a vision who can do capacity building for the visionary human resource for the represent and future. There is a need to include scholars of repute in the mainstream policies of the University of Jammu. So that scholars of repute who have been denied their due in the previous university system for upholding the Indic scholarship at various levels must get justice. There are scholars who have got dejected due to subversion in the university system and denied opportunities to serve the university and the nation. That has to be corrected. The message should not go that justice delayed is justice denied. Once the well-meaning scholars with nationalist bent of mind are given their due, it will restore the overall credibility of the university system. People have high hopes from the incumbent Vice-Chancellor.
