Srinagar, Nov 22: As the cold wave continues its grip over Kashmir valley, the Meteorological Department has predicted further decline in night temperatures and the persistence of foggy weather conditions over the next 48 hours across Kashmir.
Over the past week, Kashmir has been reeling under intense cold wave, with minimum temperatures ranging between minus 1-2 degrees Celsius in certain areas. Srinagar, experienced the coldest night of the season at minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director Meteorological Department told Rising Kashmir that they anticipate a continued drop in minimum temperatures. “During the next three to four days, there will be foggy weather conditions and colder nights in the region,” he added.
Dr Mukhtar said that dry and cold weather is likely to persist until November 27 in both Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh. Additionally, he predicted an escalation of the cold wave in Kashmir and Jammu during this time frame.
“In the coming days, temperatures are expected to decrease further. Foggy weather conditions may impact vehicular and air traffic in the morning and evening hours,” he said.
The Director also mentioned the potential for rain and snow at scattered places from November 27 to 30. Meanwhile, dense fog continued to blanket many areas, forcing vehicles to operate with headlights on during morning and evening hours.
As per Meteorological department data, Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.0 degree Celsius, while Gulmarg registered a minimum temperature of 0.6 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, a famous tourist place recorded a low of minus 3.3 degree Celsius while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.4-degree Celsius.
Javid Anjum, Director of Srinagar International Airport said there were no delays or cancellations for any flights at the airport.
“All inbound and outbound flights proceeded as scheduled, and there were no disruptions or cancellations. There have been no issues reported regarding the landing and take-off of flights at the airport,” he added.
In the same vein, Saqib Yousuf Yatoo (IRTS), Chief Area Manager (CAM) Kashmir, reported that all train services between Baramulla and Banihal ran smoothly without any deviations from the regular schedule.
The dense fog descended upon the region, impacting vehicular traffic during both morning and evening hours. The reduced visibility prompted motorists to exercise caution, with many vehicles operating with headlights on for increased safety.
Commuters experienced delays and slower travel speeds as the thick fog enveloped roadways, creating challenging conditions for drivers. Authorities issued advisories urging travellers to use fog lights, maintain safe distances, and adhere to speed limits to ensure road safety.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that the dense fog is likely to persist for the next few days, affecting the morning and evening commute.
