Kulgam, Nov 09: Mission Director Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) Dr G N Itoo on Thursday said that 73 percent of households in Jammu and Kashmir have tap water connections. He said this on his visit to south Kashmir’s Kulgam district where he inaugurated two JJM schemes at Poniwah and Arigatnoo.
The water supply scheme at Poniwah was constructed under Jal Jeevan Mission at a project cost of Rs 228 lakh, and the water supply scheme at Arigatnoo was constructed with a project cost of Rs 83.37 lakh.
Itoo said there are 3100 water supply schemes under work in J&K under the Jal Jeevan Mission. “In some places, the infrastructure is in advanced stages, and we are working diligently to complete them by the deadline of December 31. Our staff is even working in double shifts in some areas,” he said.
“In Kulgam, we have covered almost 78 percent of households with tap water connections. We have improved the quality and regularity of supply. The habitations that were previously uncovered and didn’t receive quality supply have been addressed with the implementation of the new schemes,” the Mission Director said.
With time, the testing of supply will be facilitated by almost 1300 trained women in Kulgam, and with the assistance of the Pani Samiti, they will be able to determine whether the quality of supply has improved, Dr Itoo said, adding “Community support has been consistently good throughout.”
