Srinagar, Mar 17: The Jammu & Kashmir government has confirmed that 39 cooperative societies are registered in the Sopore constituency, with 11 societies under the J&K Cooperative Societies Act, 1989, and 28 societies under the J&K Self-Reliant Cooperative Act, 1999.
In response to the Un-Starred Assembly tabled by MLA Sopore Irshad Rasool Kar, the government detailed its efforts to revitalize these societies, enhance their profitability, and ensure better utilization of assets.
It stated that a proposal is in the pipeline to ensure the multi-faceted development of assets owned by these societies. This includes optimum utilization of land resources to improve productivity and financial sustainability.
To boost the profitability of these societies, the government has undertaken several initiatives. Under the PACS as Common Service Centres (CSCs) program, Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) have been provided with computer systems and other essential infrastructure to modernize operations. Additionally, these societies have been linked with Bharat Bheej Sankari Samiti Ltd. (BBSL), NOCL, and NECL, expanding their business activities and market reach.
Further, the government said in its reply that it has focused on reviving commercial hubs operated by the cooperative sector. Apna Bazaar Sopore was made functional again in 2024 after years of closure, providing a much-needed boost to local trade.
Additionally, a Mini-Super Bazaar at Tarzoo is nearing completion, which is expected to further enhance economic activities in the region.
Regarding financial oversight, the government confirmed that audits have been conducted for 09 cooperative societies under the J&K Cooperative Societies Act, 1989, covering the period till 2023-24.
However, the audit for Northern Poultry Cooperative Society remains pending. Meanwhile, the Kashmir Mercantile Cooperative Bank Sopore is currently being audited by a panel of approved Chartered Accountants.
“We are committed to revitalizing the cooperative sector in Sopore through modernization, financial reforms, and infrastructural upgrades. While progress has been made, efforts are needed to ensure the long-term sustainability and profitability of these cooperative societies,” it said in its reply.
