Jammu, Aug 30: The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed spirited celebrations of National Sports Day, with the Department of Youth Services and Sports organizing a series of events across districts to honour the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The celebrations, promoting a message of respect, unity, and sporting excellence, saw enthusiastic participation from hundreds of young athletes.According to a statement issued here, in a vibrant tribute, the Department of Youth Services and Sports J&K, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Rifle Shooting Association, successfully organized a Rifle Shooting competition on Saturday at the Rifle Shooting Hall in Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. This event was part of a series of state-wide celebrations held from August 20 to September 2, to honour the legendary legacy of Major Dhyan Chand, revered as the ‘Wizard of Hockey’. The competitions were aligned with the true spirit of the National Sports Day, carrying a powerful message of respect, unity, and remembrance for national icons whose dedication continues to inspire generations. Simultaneously, in District Doda, a series of sports activities were organized under the supervision of the District Youth Services and Sports Officer. As part of the celebrations, a rifle shooting tournament was conducted at the Rifle Shooting Hall on August 29 and 30 for the age groups Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19. A large number of young sportspersons, approximately 150 boys and girls, participated with great enthusiasm, showcasing their talent, discipline, and sporting spirit. The competition in Jammu was held under the esteemed patronage of the Director General of Youth Services and Sports. The event was organized under the guidance of the Deputy Director Central and the chief supervision of the Joint Director of Youth Services and Sports for Jammu. The overall supervision for the smooth and successful execution of the event was provided by the District Youth Services and Sports Officer of Jammu with assistance from Rifle Shooting Incarge of YSS. Apart from the shooting event in Doda, multiple activities were also carried out by the Department of Youth Services and Sports to promote the importance of sports and physical fitness among students. The day highlighted the message of teamwork, dedication, and the role of sports in nation building. The District Youth Services and Sports Officer of Doda encouraged the youth to actively participate in sports and carry forward the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand by excelling in their respective fields. Dignitaries from the concerned association and technical officials of the Department were present at both locations to ensure the flawless execution of the events. The presence of these officials underscored the department’s commitment to promoting sporting excellence and providing a robust platform for young athletes across the Union Territory.The Joint Director of Youth Services and Sports Jammu expressed immense appreciation for all the participants who showcased their skills and sportsmanship. The official also commended the efforts of everyone involved for organizing a successful and well-coordinated event that truly embodied the spirit of athletic dedication and national pride.
