Division of Plant Biotechnology, SKUAST-K organized a one-day Workshop on ‘Genome Editing for Modern Agriculture’ on 29th Oct, 2024. The event brought together researchers and students from different fields for an enriching day of learning and networking. The event was a significant platform for enhancing knowledge about cutting-edge crop improvement technologies, focusing on genome editing. Prof. M Ashraf Bhat, HoD and Organizer of the workshop in his welcome address, gave a comprehensive overview of the programme and the purpose of organizing such programmes for budding researchers as well as agricultural experts.
He emphasized the importance of modern technologies, urging participants to leverage the knowledge gained and apply it to advance their research and career aspirations. The Guest of Honour Dr. Kutubuddin Ali Molla, Senior Scientist at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Odisha delivered a lecture on genome editing using the novel TnpB- mediated multiplexing in rice, an alternative to Cas9/12. His lecture outlined the latest advancements in CRISPR-Cas9, base editing and prime editing, showcasing examples of successful applications in various crops. Participants engaged in threadbare discussions exploring future research directions and collaborative opportunities. Prof. Amjad M. Husaini, proposed the vote of thanks.
