Leh, July 31: In a significant step towards fostering environmental responsibility, the Women Wing of Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam has taken the lead in promoting waste segregation awareness in Ladakh. The initiative aims to educate local communities, especially women, on the importance of responsible waste management to ensure a cleaner and healthier region. As part of their ongoing efforts, members of the group visited the Skampari Solid Waste Management Plant in Leh. The visit included the symbolic handing over of household waste that had been properly segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories—highlighting their commitment to setting an example for others.During the visit, the women also interacted with staff at the facility to understand how efficient waste sorting plays a critical role in maintaining hygiene and reducing environmental impact in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.“Small steps lead to big changes,” said a member of the Women Wing. “We believe that educating women, who manage households, is key to starting meaningful change at the grassroots level. We urge every family in Leh to start waste segregation at home—it’s easy, and it truly makes a difference.”The group emphasized that women can be powerful change makers when it comes to sustainable living. Through their campaign, they aim to raise awareness across neighborhoods by conducting door-to-door outreach and educational drives, particularly targeting residential colonies and schools.“This initiative is not just about handling waste—it’s about shaping a mindset,” said another participant. “Leh is our home, and it’s our responsibility to keep it clean for future generations.”The Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam has expressed plans to continue such awareness campaigns in other parts of Leh in collaboration with local administration and civic bodies.Officials from the Skampari Solid Waste Management Plant lauded the initiative, saying that community participation is vital for effective implementation of solid waste policies in the region.
