Srinagar, Sept 07: An emergency ride on Sunday turned into a birth story as twins arrived before the hospital in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district when the woman was en route to SKIMS Srinagar in an ambulance.
Officials said a woman referred for complications due to breech presentation safely delivered twins inside an 108 ambulance while being transferred from CHC Kangan to SKIMS Soura.
The 108 Emergency Response Centre received a call regarding 35-year-old Shameema Bano, a resident of Ganiwan village, in Tehsil Gund. She had complained of severe labour pain, and an ambulance from CHC Kangan was immediately dispatched.
“During transit, the patient’s condition worsened. Recognising the urgency, on-duty Emergency Medical Technician, Zahida Bano, consulted ERCP Dr. Rajpal on the 108 emergency helpline and successfully conducted the delivery inside an ambulance near Wayil at 12:45 p.m.,” said Mushtaq Ahmed, Project Head 108 Emergency Services.
He said the woman gave birth to two male babies who were immediately provided post-natal care, adding that one newborn required CPR, which was promptly administered.
“Following stabilisation, the mother and both infants were shifted to District Hospital Ganderbal, where they were reported to be healthy and stable,” Ahmed added.
The attendants and family members who accompanied the patient expressed deep gratitude to the 108-ambulance service and its team for their timely and professional service.
Mushtaq appreciated the dedicated efforts of the EMT and ambulance pilot. He said that since the launch of 108 services, over 1,345 successful deliveries have been conducted inside ambulances by their trained professionals.
“All 108 ambulances are equipped with skilled EMTs and essential pre-hospital equipment, including delivery kits, to handle such critical emergencies,” Ahmed said.
He urged the public to dial 108 for any kind of medical emergency, assuring that the service remains committed to saving lives across Jammu & Kashmir.
