Jammu, Sept 29: Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday called for unity and brotherhood among the people of Jammu & Kashmir. He urged the public to vote for development and progress in the upcoming elections.
“In recent years, political parties have exploited division, using it as a tactic to justify their lack of development in both regions,” Azad said while addressing a series of public meetings in Jammu, adding, “This has led to conflict, while those in power enjoy their privileges.”
Shared struggles should unite the people rather than create divisions, he said, adding that genuine progress can only be achieved through unity.
Reflecting on his tenure as chief minister, Azad said, “During my time, people experienced real progress and development. We initiated a developmental revolution with double and triple shifts that no other leader has managed to replicate. Many of the projects I sanctioned remain incomplete, highlighting the urgent need for a renewed focus on development.”
The DPAP chief expressed concerns about the promises made by various political parties regarding the restoration of Article 370, saying, “While we all desire its return, we cannot expect anything from the BJP, and Congress has also failed to address this crucial issue. Restoration of Article 370 through the assembly is not feasible; however, we can legislate to ensure that no outsider can buy land or secure jobs in our region, which was the essence of Article 370.”
“I do not cheat, lie or mislead,” the former CM asserted. “While some may be accustomed to falsehoods and have voted based on those lies, I speak the truth, which may only be understood by a few. I will never offer false hope or make unrealistic promises.”
Azad said there is widespread disillusionment among the public, who are weary of empty slogans that have led to bloodshed and unrest. He said the people of Jammu desire peace. “Whether in Samba, Gandhi Nagar or Bakshi Nagar, the people of Jammu yearn for harmony. This is part of our Dogra culture, and we must strive to maintain this unity. We cannot let ourselves be divided by parties seeking to exploit our differences,” he said.
Azad also expressed his commitment to serving the poor, who lack access to basic necessities such as water and electricity. “We will restore the Roshni scheme, which previously benefited the underprivileged but was revoked by the current government. Our focus will be on ensuring that every citizen has access to the essential services they deserve,” he said.
The DPAP chairman outlined a comprehensive development agenda that includes creating more districts, schools, tehsils, colleges and roads to enhance infrastructure and educational opportunities in the region. “This is our only agenda,” he said.
