Srinagar, Feb 06: A truck driver was shot dead by security forces after allegedly failing to stop at a checkpoint and leading the troops on a 23-kilometer chase in the Sangrama area of Baramulla on Thursday morning.
The victim, identified as Waseem Ahmad Mir (25) of Goripora Bomai in Sopore, was shot by the army after his vehicle allegedly failed to stop despite repeated warnings. According to the army, the incident began when security forces set up a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) in response to a specific intelligence input about the movement of terrorists.
The army stated that a suspicious, speeding truck was spotted approaching the checkpoint. Despite being signaled to stop, the driver allegedly ignored the warnings and continued driving at high speed, prompting the army to chase the vehicle. The chase lasted for over 23 kilometres before the vehicle was finally forced to halt at Sangrama Chowk after the security forces fired shots at the truck’s tyres.
Upon halting the truck, the army immediately conducted a detailed search and found that the driver, Waseem Ahmad Mir, was injured. He was quickly taken to the Government Medical College in Baramulla but was later declared dead.
The truck was sent to the nearest police station, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities have confirmed that the truck is fully loaded, but the contents are being examined by police to ascertain further details.
An FIR has been filed by the Baramulla Police, and the police also initiated post-mortem proceedings to determine the exact cause of death.
