The Kulgam district in south Kashmir offers several captivating trekking routes for the trekking enthusiasts to explore the thrill and the adventure these trekking spots encompass.
The routes developed by Special Forest Division Kulgam are flocked by a number of trekkers every month or week. On these routes trekkers can come across several species and can explore the stunning meadows and springs on these trails.
Aharbal to Kousarnag:
The top trekking and famous route which gets plenty of
trekkers every season are on the Aharbal to Kousarnag trekking route. The trek starts from
Aharbal – the famous waterfall and offbeat tourist place in Kulgam.
It is a 30 kilometers trekking route up-to the endpoint at Kousarnag. The route is moderate in gradient. On the way, trekkers can take a rest at the places like, Sangam, kongwattan, Adagingi, Chatternad, Mahinag or Sekijan. The eating place is at the onset of the trek at Aharbal only.
Trekkers get the opportunity to see beautiful birds, animals, plants and trees such as: Common Myna, Himalayan Jungle Crow, Ring dove, leopard, black bear, Kail, Fir, Spruce, Cranbery bush. The a stunning picturesque location on the way is Astanmarg. Trekkers may also see alpine meadows, high altitude lakes, scenic views of conifers and springs.
Gulzarabad to Badibehak/Yaripathri:
The trek from Gulzar-abad to Badibehak/Yaripathri covers a distance of eight kilometers with an easy gradient. Trekkers will encounter diverse wildlife including woodpeckers, Blue Rock Pigeons, Great Tits, House Sparrows, Himalayan Jungle Crows, Leopards, Black Bears, Monkeys, Jackals, and Kails. The route is lined with Fir, Yew (Pastul), and Birch (Burzakul) trees.
A picturesque spot, Sunder-top, offers breathtaking views. Trekkers may also visit Peer-Nag for spiritual solace. Preferably trekkers may choose resting and eating points as at Walinard andGulzarabad respectively.
Badibehak to Sundartop:
The trek from Badibehak to Sundartop spans a distance of
10 kilometers, presenting a moderately challenging route. Along this path, trekkers can
expect encounters with diverse wildlife, including the Common Myna, the majestic Himalayan Jungle Crow, and the cheerful Laughing Thrush. The route is known to host occasional sightings of Leopards, Black Bears, Monkeys, and Jackals.
The landscape is adorned with the stately Fir, the ancient Yew (Pastul), and the graceful Birch
(Burzakul) trees, creating a picturesque natural setting. Moh is located three kilometers away,
and no facilities are available for dining. Trekkers will find themselves amidst the beauty of Alpine Meadows, surrounded by the awe-inspiring sight of the Rocky Mountains. It is worth noting that washroom facilities are not available along the way, so trekkers should be prepared accordingly.
Nandimargh to Zajimargh:
The trek from Nandimarg to Zajimarg covers a distance of five kilometers, offering moderately challenging terrain for trekkers. Along this route, Nature enthusiasts may spot various bird species including the Common Myna, the majestic Himalayan Jungle Crow, and the friendly House Sparrow. Wildlife encounters may also include Bears and Leopards. The trail is flanked by impressive conifers such as Fir, Yew (Pastul), Maple, and Cranberry Bushes, providing a scenic backdrop. Preferably trekkers can take rest at Zumasthal, Khasnad, and Padd and may also use Nandimarg and Zajimarg as eating spots.
The nearest picturesque locations are Bramsar and Chirsar. trekkers can revel in the beauty of Alpine Meadows and the refreshing sights of springs along the way.
Malwan to Chimmer:
The trek from Malwan to Chimmer Top covers a distance of 5.5 kilometers and offers a moderately challenging path for trekkers. Along the way, you might come across various birds like the Common Myna, the grand Himalayan Jungle Crow, and the friendly House Sparrow. Keep an eye out for wildlife too, such as bears and leopards. You won’t find any places to eat along this route, so make sure to bring your own provisions. The area is also home to Kail trees and Cranberry bushes, adding to the natural beauty.
While there are no settlements directly on the path, one can find a forest guard hut in Malwan. Take in the serene Meadows, enjoy the sight of tall Conifers, and perhaps even come across some refreshing springs.
Note: It is important to note that the safety of these trekking routes haven’t been officially assessed, but locals from district Kulgam and other parts of UT of J&K often explore these routes for trekking adventures.
