The concept of long-distance train travel may be new to the residents of Kashmir. Most locals are more used to cabs, buses, and airplanes because of the non-availability of large trains and routes. But now that the Kashmir to Delhi train service is a reality, this development can alter people’s opinions about rail travel. As someone who had these concerns initially, I know that trains weren’t the greatest mode of transportation for lengthy trips. However, after more than 15 years of train travel throughout India, train travel can be among the safest, most pleasant and most enriching ways to discover the country’s many landscapes and cultures.
I was also apprehensive when I first began taking the train. After hearing about packed cabins, delays, and general discomfort, I wondered if it would be the best decision. However, as I travelled on trains more, I understood that these early worries were primarily the consequence of ignorance and a lack of planning. Train travellers must not worry compared to other forms of transportation; train travel offers a higher degree of safety and comfort. Yes, trains can occasionally be delayed, but advancements have made them more dependable as time has passed.
I will feel happy if someone gets motivated by my small experiences as I have some useful advice based on my experience that will help you have a more pleasant, safe, and comfortable train ride from Kashmir to Delhi. The first important thing to do is that the passengers must purchase train tickets well in advance. This is one of the finest things they can do while organizing their trips. This ensures a confirmed seat and allows you to select the best class and time options. The Tatkal system allows last-minute bookings if you cannot obtain a confirmed ticket in advance.
However, this can be more expensive, and not everyone can get a Tatkal ticket. Traveling without a reservation is something I will hardly recommend. In emergencies, one may try their luck and then politely describe the situation to the ticket checker, but one must be informed that not having a ticket may lead to discomfort. Also, unreserved travel is prohibited. The last thing you want is to be discovered by the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TT) and subjected to fines or unwelcome scrutiny.
Train stations can be chaotic, particularly in bigger cities like Delhi. Train Travellers must be mindful of their surroundings when they get to the station, especially if they travel with little children or elderly members. It is important for their safety. Because trains move quickly and don’t usually stop for long, it’s best to wait until the train has completely stopped before boarding or disembarking. Boarding or un-boarding a train too soon while still going is risky and not ideal.
One more important thing is that you must keep your family close by at all times, especially when moving luggage or negotiating busy stations. While buying food from the train vendors, use caution. It is important to note that bringing food is always safer, especially if you have hygienic concerns. Due to the possibility of petty thieves, exercise extra caution when using the lavatory in the evening.
Take care of kids to ensure they’re safe, and don’t let them go out of your sight. Don’t let them go to washrooms where doors are, which may be risky. Even in your cabin, keep your valuables close to hand and don’t leave your luggage unattended; that can be easy prey for thieves.
One important benefit of using trains is meeting individuals from different backgrounds. It is one of the pleasures of taking the train. Talking with other travellers can improve the quality of your trip and can result in friendships that last a lifetime. Be amiable, personable, and considerate of others’ personal space.
Traveling can be made more enriching by exchanging experiences and stories. But it is important to respect others as some may not like to part of conversations. My family had a good relationship with some Sri Lankan professors visiting India a few years prior. We are still enjoying the tea bags they gave us, and we were delighted to swap gifts.
Refrain from engaging in pointless disputes or altercations. By keeping the surrounding peaceful, long train rides can be made more enjoyable for all passengers. Be safe from addictions of any kind, such as smoking, which is not only dangerous but may land anyone in trouble. Although traveling by train is usually safe, there may be times when you need to take immediate action. The train has an emergency chain that you can pull to halt it in the event of a fire or other serious emergencies. But it is good to remember that if the emergency chain is misused, a heavy fine and other legal consequences may result.
We all must maintain trains’ cleanliness and safety. This is crucial not just for ourselves but also for others. As Kashmiris, we have a double responsibility to keep trains clean, and it should align with Kashmir’s beauty standards. It is important to understand that unclean trains detract travellers from the stunning scenery they pass and may influence tourists’ opinions. Don’t litter, dispose of your garbage properly. Even little things like picking up after ourselves can have a big impact.
After years of train travel, this is the most crucial thing I’ve learned: to unwind and enjoy the journey. Trains provide a unique perspective that offers an opportunity to explore the shifting scenery. Reading, thinking, or interacting with fellow travellers is a fantastic chance. Therefore, when making travel plans, remember to be organized, exercise caution, and have fun.
