Star female cricketer from Shopian, Jasia Akhtar, hopeful of getting WPL berth

Shopian, Feb 08: Star female cricketer, JasiaAkhter,from South Kashmir’s Shopian district is hopeful to get berth in the inaugural Women’s Premier League(WPL)  for which auction will begin on February 13, 2023 at Mumbai.
A total of 409 players from 15 countries will go under the hammer for WPL auction.
WPL is a T20 cricket league organised by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
BCCI had received 1525 registrations out of which 246 native players and 163 overseas players were included in the auction list.
Jasia Akhter from Braripora village of Shopian and Sarla Devi from Jammu are two players from the UT to figure in the list of 409 cricketers who will be auctioned to five franchises on 13 February.
Jasia figures at serial 250 while Sarla is at serial 305 in WPL auction list of players which was released on Tuesday.
“I performed very well in domestic cricket last season so I am hopeful get a berth in WPL,” Jasia Akhtar told Rising Kashmir on phone, adding that she is figuring at top on ODI rankings for women’s domestic cricket with 500 plus runs and at number two for T20 rankings with 590 runs.
She added that there is lot of excitement among her family members and fans and every one of them wants to see her playing in WPL.
Jasia has been playing from Rajasthan state for past two years.
The right-handed batter opens her team and has been elevated to the position of captain.
“Our team qualified for semifinals under my captaincy and it is ranked as one among four top teams,” she said.
Previously Jasia played for Punjab, Trailblazers and India Reds.
She was also called for National camp for India women’s national team in 2017 but was unable to find a place in the playing eleven.
The 34 right-handed batter started playing professional cricket in 2010.
A maximum of 90 players are scheduled to be auctioned for inaugural WPL which is scheduled to be begin from March 4, 2023.
