Ganderbal, Apr21: Authorities have reopened the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) Road for one-way passenger traffic from Sonamarg towards Kargil after days of closure triggered by torrential rains, fresh snowfall, and a landslide at Zojila Pass.
Earlier, inclement weather conditions, including heavy rain and snowfall near Zojila Pass and Minamarg in Drass, had led to the temporary closure of the strategic highway. The disruption had left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
Reports said that passenger traffic was allowed to resume on Monday afternoon after the Beacon authorities gave the green signal, confirming that the road was safe for movement.
A traffic police official confirmed that a landslide had occurred at the India Gate stretch of Zojila earlier in the day. “Following the incident, Traffic Police along with DTI Farooq Ahmad and the Beacon team rushed to the spot. Heavy machinery was deployed, and after hectic efforts, the landslide was cleared,” the official said.
However, authorities have allowed only passenger vehicles to move from Sonamarg towards Kargil, while the movement of heavy vehicles remains restricted for now.
Travelers have been advised to follow traffic advisories and drive cautiously due to the possibility of more weather-induced disruptions along the route.
