Anantnag, Nov 23: The Jammu and Kashmir Police is committed to encouraging sports activities to channel the energy of the youth in a positive direction and help them become responsible citizens, said V.K. Birdi, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a Police Martyrs T20 Cricket Tournament organized by Anantnag Police, IGP Birdi said it is important to engage young people in constructive activities.
“The Police Martyrs T20 Tournament, organized by Anantnag Police, will see the participation of 32 teams. Sports activities like these should be promoted to connect more youth with the Jammu and Kashmir Police. This will help channel their energy positively and prepare them to take on future responsibilities in society,” Birdi said.
He said the Jammu and Kashmir Police consistently organizes such events to strengthen the police-public relationship. “These tournaments foster a positive connection between the police and the public. We frequently organize such events across various sports to build trust and collaboration,” he added.
Responding to a question about extending these tournaments to rural areas, Birdi said the tournament’s structure is designed to include matches at multiple grounds, including rural locations. “The matches will not be limited to here (GDC Anantnag ground). Grounds in rural areas will also host matches, allowing residents to watch and participate in these events,” he said.
Addressing the issue of drug abuse, IGP Birdi said the police aim to combat the menace legally and socially. “Our aim is to tackle drug-related problems and hold toxic elements accountable under the law. Simultaneously, we strive to steer the youth away from such issues and encourage them to use their energy for personal and societal development,” he said.
When asked about the role of sports in achieving these goals, Birdi said, “Sports play a crucial role in physical and mental well-being. Regardless of age, sports contribute to health and happiness. Even you, as media persons, might leave your cameras to play if given a chance!”
Birdi encouraged youth to actively participate in tournaments and use their energy in sports activities. “Take advantage of these opportunities and channel your energy positively,” he said.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by international cricketer Parvez Rasool, DIG South Kashmir Javaid Iqbal Matoo, DC Anantnag Syed Fakhrudin Hamid, and SSP Anantnag Dr. G.V.S. Chakravarthy, alongside IGP Birdi.
