Srinagar, Dec 28: Following the recent heavy snowfall in Kashmir, the Jal Shakti Department has restored over 96% of the affected water supply schemes in the Kashmir.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Chief Engineer Jal Shakti Department Kashmir Braham Jyoti Sharma said that the valley’s water supply network, comprising 2,050 schemes, faced disruptions in 217 schemes due to the snowfall. “We had fully restored 106 schemes and partially restored 96 while as only 15 are non-functional.”
He said that the restoration process was carried out under extremely harsh weather conditions. Despite challenges, the department’s staff worked tirelessly, ensuring 96.93% of the water supply schemes were operational by the Saturday evening.
He also said that some areas faced specific issues due to frozen sources and supply lines. “These challenges were addressed promptly, and wherever new requirements arose, we provided the necessary resources to expedite the restoration,” he said, commending the field staff’s dedication.
Snowfall on Saturday disrupted essential services across Kashmir, including water supply, electricity, and transportation. The sub-zero temperatures also led to the freezing of pipelines and water sources in several areas, complicating restoration efforts.
Sharma said that the department is continuously monitoring the situation closely. “Field staff are working round the clock to address any remaining disruptions. While nearly all major schemes have been restored, isolated rural areas with difficult access remain a priority, he added.
