Jammu, March 11: The School of Architecture and Landscape Design (SoALD) at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) made a remarkable contribution to the 3rd Tawi Festival with its digital presentation on the architectural documentation of Amar Mahal on Tuesday.
Titled “Unravelling the Architectural Grandeur of Amar Mahal,” the presentation was delivered by Ar. Aditi Sharma, Assistant Professor, SoALD, SMVDU, whose extensive research on Jammu’s heritage structures added depth and authenticity to the study. The festival, inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at the historic Amar Mahal Palace, also marked the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Amar Mahal Museum and Library, commemorating 50 years of its cultural and historical significance. Organised by the Hari Tara Charitable Trust (HTCT), the event brought together a distinguished gathering of artists, historians, academicians, literary figures, and policymakers, engaging in meaningful discussions on the region’s rich heritage. Under the meticulous guidance of Ar. Aditi Sharma, students from SoALD undertook a four-month-long documentation project, producing detailed plans, elevations, sections, and 3D visualisations to showcase the architectural evolution of Amar Mahal. The presentation featured an immersive video, offering a dynamic insight into the craftsmanship and artistry of the palace. Ar. Abhiney Gupta, Head of SoALD, played a pivotal role in mentoring students throughout this rigorous academic and heritage conservation project. His leadership ensured that students gained invaluable hands-on experience in architectural preservation.
Prof. Pragati Kumar, Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, lauded the team’s efforts, stating: “This initiative not only enhances our students’ practical knowledge but also contributes to the preservation of our architectural heritage for future generations.” A testament to the rich legacy of Dogra architecture, this project serves as an invaluable repository of Amar Mahal’s historical and cultural essence. The initiative was made possible through the support of Dr. Jyotsna Singh, the Hari Tara Charitable Trust, and the Amar Mahal Museum and Library, providing students with an unparalleled opportunity to explore and document architectural excellence.
