Pulwama, July 28: Several students of a government school in the Khrew area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district fainted on Monday after a gas leak incident in the school’s chemistry laboratory.Riyaz Ahmad Mir, Incharge Principal of Government Girls Higher Secondary School Khrew, told Rising Kashmir that a few Class 12 students were conducting a chemistry practical when one of them mishandled glacial acetic acid. The chemical accidentally spilled on the ground, triggering a smoke reaction that affected at least nine students, causing them to fall unconscious.”The students were immediately evacuated, and the incident triggered panic among others present on the campus,” he said.All affected students were rushed to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Khrew.Block Medical Officer (BMO) Pampore said that around 31 students reported to the facility for treatment. “Out of them, 16 were discharged after receiving first aid,” he said.He added that the remaining 15 students were stabilized at the health centre. “Thirteen students with low oxygen saturation levels were referred to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, while two others were shifted to Sub-District Hospital Pampore,” the BMO informed, adding that all students were in stable condition.
