Jammu, June 21: As part of its ongoing SaptahikRangdhara Weekly Theatre Series, the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) Saturday staged the Hindi play Malik Kamaal NaukarDhamaal at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu. Written and directed by Shashi Bhushan Sharma, the play was presented under the banner of Society for Environment Education and Modern Arts (SEEMA).
The production offered a satirical exploration of modern society’s moral contradictions, centred around a mystical figure, Malik, who uses a dream-fulfilling machine triggered by people’s confessions. The narrative featured a diverse cast of characters—from a gay youth and a transgender person to a shopkeeper, dancer, lawyer, baba, Arab sheikh, and joker—each revealing hidden layers of societal hypocrisy.Dr Javaid Rahi, Divisional Head, JKAACL Jammu, presented a memento to the team and praised the play’s bold storytelling, witty direction, and seamless coordination. “Such productions reflect the evolving pulse of contemporary theatre in the region,” he said.
The cast delivered spirited performances, with Tushar Sharma as Totla, Sahil Singh Rajput as Nahinashi, Umesh Kumar as Chemist, Neha Sharma as Monika the dancer, Diya Parihar as Banto, Kamakshya Dogra as Pushi, Abdul Jungbahadur Khan as Nandu Naukar, and Irfana Bano Mir as Kinnar. Shazi Khan stood out in multiple roles including a Kashmiri, Baba, Sheikh and Joker.Dynamic dance sequences were performed by Ravika, Rozy, Miksha, Sukriti, Sheetal, and Purvi Kalsi, adding energy and colour to the production.The play was met with resounding applause, appreciated for its humour, social relevance, and impactful message. With its sharp commentary and engaging storytelling, Malik Kamaal NaukarDhamaal left a lasting impression on the audience.
