Baramulla, March 29: Residents of the Sangrama area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district held a protest on Wednesday against the Power Development Department (PDD) over irregular electricity supply in the holy month of Ramadan.
The protestors said the irregular power supply in the area is causing problems for them in the holy month. They blocked the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway, due to which the traffic movement was affected.
“Even in this holy month, we are witnessing frequent power cuts, especially during Iftaar and Sehri times. On one hand, they (PDD) are installing smart meters, while on the other side, they are not even providing us with proper electricity,” said Showkat Ahmad, a local.
As the protesters blocked the road which led to massive traffic jams on the highway near Sangrama, the local administration took prompt action and cleared the road off the protesters.
The residents said they were forced to come to the streets after the authorities failed to ensure a regular power supply despite repeated requests.
The protest ended peacefully after the local administration intervened and assured them that their concerns would be addressed.
Meanwhile, the PDD officials said that steps would be taken to provide an uninterrupted power supply as per the schedule.
