After spending most of his childhood scribbling on scrap paper, Sahil Mir, a 26-year-old budding artist from Kawdara locality of Sheh re Khaas Srinagar, has recently started taking drawing seriously to carve out a unique identity in society.
His journey from casual doodles to becoming an internet sensation is a testament to his dedication and passion for art.
Sahil completed his bachelor’s degree from Islamia College, and his unique art style has captivated audiences online. He initially created typical sketches but always felt a curiosity to explore different forms of art.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, he gained popularity on social media with sketches of characters from the TV series Dirilis: Ertugrul (Resurrection: Ertugrul), leading to orders from people who admired his work.
“Earning money was not my motive. I had a unique passion for art and wanted to improve my skills,” he said.
Sahil’s inclination towards art began in his childhood, where he created various drawings and paintings. His inspiration grew when he discovered a Chinese shadow artist who used ballpoint pens to create shadow art.
This artist’s ability to use simple tools to create stunning visuals resonated with Sahil, and he decided to add a human angle to this technique.
He embarked on a project using hundreds of pencils, taking 15-20 days to complete a piece on the famous poet Allama Iqbal. This project, more challenging than his previous works, received wide appreciation across Kashmir.
Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Sahil continued to explore different artistic avenues.
He believes that real-life experiences are crucial for gaining a broader perspective on society, which is why he also helps his family with their business. “Life outside art is important for gaining a wide angle regarding society,” he said.
In 2021, Sahil took on the challenge of creating his first human sculpture at home. This task was even more difficult than shadow art.
He now believes that sculpture art has more scope in Kashmir compared to other art forms. Over the past year, many schools have approached him to create various sculptures.
“Recently, I made two sculptures at GHSS Kothi Bagh School: one of a Hangul and another of a snow bear. My passion for my work has only grown,” Sahil said, adding that he is now more interested in sculpture creation.
“Practicing is still the hardest part of learning to draw (or learning anything),” Sahil said. “It’s hard not only to find the motivation but also guidance on how to practice effectively. It probably doesn’t help that I keep switching mediums.”
Sahil credits his family for their unwavering support, stating that peace of mind is essential for any artist’s progress. “They have always supported my passion,” he said.
Despite his achievements, Sahil acknowledges that he still has a long way to go. “I’ve made progress and enjoyed the journey. Yes, I still make mistakes, but they aren’t the same ones I used to make,” he added.
The young artist is also known for carving pencils into unique and attractive designs. This intricate art form has garnered attention and admiration, adding another dimension to his artistic repertoire. His ability to transform ordinary pencils into detailed sculptures showcases his versatility and creativity.
Regarding his future plans, Sahil is currently working on a 3D nail art project of the Holy Kaaba, which will be the first of its kind in the Valley. This ambitious project reflects his continuous drive to innovate and push the boundaries of his artistic expression.
Sahil’s journey as an artist is a blend of passion, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring artists in Kashmir and beyond.
His ability to adapt and explore various mediums, from traditional sketches and shadow art to sculptures and pencil carvings, demonstrates his commitment to his craft and his willingness to embrace new challenges.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Sahil’s involvement in helping his family with their business highlights his understanding of the importance of real-life experiences in shaping one’s perspective.
He believes that artists need to engage with the world around them to create meaningful and impactful art.
Sahil’s unwavering dedication to his art and his ongoing exploration of new techniques and mediums have garnered widespread recognition. His work has been widely appreciated, establishing him as a prominent figure in the local art community.
His ability to create art that resonates with people on a personal level has earned him a loyal following and has solidified his reputation as a multi-talented artist.
As Sahil continues to evolve and refine his skills, he remains committed to his artistic journey. He understands that growth comes from continuous practice and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
His story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in achieving one’s dreams.
Sahil is not just an artist; he is a symbol of the vibrant and evolving art scene in Kashmir. His work serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the region and the potential for innovation and creativity.
As he embarks on new projects and explores new mediums, there is no doubt that Sahil will continue to leave a lasting impact on the world of art.
