Bandipora, Feb 27: The situation in Hajin town of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district has become worrisome after a portion of the Hajin-Bandipora road along the Jhelum River collapsed on Wednesday, following the development of cracks earlier this month.
The affected road section, located in Sheikh Mohalla of Hajin town, first exhibited cracks in early February which led authorities to divert traffic as a precautionary measure. Despite these efforts, the condition of the road deteriorated, leading to its eventual collapse into the Jhelum River.
The residents said the damage was caused due to uncontrolled sand extraction from the riverbanks, which they believe has undermined the road’s foundation.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Manzoor Ahmad Qadri, said that more than five families have been relocated to local government schools designated as temporary shelters.
He said that approximately ten shopkeepers have moved their belongings to safer locations, and others have been advised to vacate their premises. Traffic on the affected road has been restricted to prevent further incidents, Qadri added.
The DC said they are monitoring the situation closely and residents have been urged to remain vigilant, especially as adverse weather conditions persist.
“The public is urged to adhere to official guidelines and cooperate with ongoing safety measures to mitigate further risks,” he said.
MLA Sumbal, Hilal Akbar Lone also visited the Hajin Sonawari to assess the situation firsthand. He assured residents that once weather conditions improve, repair work will resume promptly.
