The news of Dr Syed Asim Razvi’s passing arrived like a thunderbolt, leaving behind a silence too heavy for words.
On May 20, yesterday, when I received a call from one of my doctor friend informing me about his demise, I was left utterly shocked. It was difficult to believe that a man who had dedicated his entire life to saving others had himself departed so suddenly due to a cardiac arrest.
For a few moments, disbelief overshadowed reality. The grief that followed was not mine alone it was shared by countless people whose lives he had touched through his kindness, brilliance, and compassion.
A healer of rare compassion, a surgeon of extraordinary brilliance, and above all, a deeply humane soul, Dr Asim passed away at the age of forty-six, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Born in the locality of Nabdipora, Hawal in Srinagar, Dr Asim belonged to a family rooted in humility, values, and service. From an early age, he displayed exceptional intelligence and an unwavering dedication to education.
His academic journey was marked by brilliance and perseverance. He completed his MBBS from Government Medical College, Srinagar and later pursued MS in General Surgery from the same institution, earning admiration from peers and mentors alike for his extraordinary skill and discipline.
Dr Asim thirst for knowledge carried him beyond borders. He achieved the prestigious DNB in Surgical Oncology, where he was awarded a gold medal for academic excellence: an honour that reflected not only his intellectual depth but also his relentless hard work. Yet even such achievements could not contain his aspirations.
Determined to master the evolving dimensions of cancer surgery, he travelled to Yonsei University in South Korea, where he completed fellowships in Colorectal and HPB Oncosurgery as well as Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery.
Despite attaining international recognition, Dr Asim remained deeply connected to his roots in Kashmir. He carried within him the pain and struggles of ordinary people. Medicine, for him, was never merely a profession it was an act of service. Countless patients remember him not only as a surgeon who treated disease, but as a compassionate listener who restored hope in moments of despair.
Many surgeries were performed free of cost for underprivileged patients, often without anyone knowing. He believed that the inability to pay should never stand between a suffering person and medical treatment. Such acts of quiet generosity defined his character more than any title or accolade ever could.
Professionally, Dr Asim served with distinction at Apollo Hospitals before joining Yashoda Hospital as Senior Surgical Oncologist. In every institution he served, he earned immense respect not only for his surgical expertise but also for the warmth and dignity with which he treated colleagues, students, nurses, and patients alike.
What made Dr Asim truly remarkable was the harmony between his brilliance and his humility. In an age where achievements often breed arrogance, he remained grounded and approachable. His smile carried reassurance, and his words reflected kindness.
Dr Syed Asim was not merely a surgeon; he was a beacon of humanity. His life teaches us that true greatness lies not only in professional excellence but also in compassion, humility, and service to mankind. He leaves behind a void impossible to fill, particularly for his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless people who looked upon him with admiration and gratitude.
The medical fraternity of Kashmir has lost one of its finest sons a man whose hands healed, whose intellect inspired, and whose heart overflowed with kindness. His departure is not just a personal loss for those who knew him, but a collective loss for society itself.
Dr Asim, your journey may have ended, but your legacy will endure through every life you touched and every prayer whispered in your memory. Your dedication, generosity, and humanity will remain etched in our hearts forever.
“Dr Asim always told me that the true purpose of life lies in helping others. He believed that kindness and service to humanity were greater than any worldly achievement. Even amidst his busy professional life, he never turned away anyone who sought his help. His words were simple, yet deeply meaningful, and today they echo painfully in my heart.
Dr Asim, I will always remember your advice to stand beside people in their moments of pain, to serve humanity with sincerity, and to never let compassion fade away. Your teachings will remain with me forever, guiding me through life. Though you are no longer among us, your wisdom, generosity, and humanity will continue to inspire countless souls.
I will remember your advice for the rest of my life.”
Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return.
