Hailing from Srinagar, 12-year-old prodigy Rehbar Islam Baktoo has become India’s youngest Mini GP rider, showcasing his exceptional talent on the global stage.
Representing India at the FIM Mini Grand Prix Bike Race in Valencia, Spain, on November 22-23, 2023, Rehbar left an indelible mark with his outstanding performance.
Currently a student at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, Delhi, in Class VIII, Rehbar has defied age barriers and proven that determination and passion are the driving forces behind his success in the MiniGP racing circuit. His fearless approach to the challenging twists and turns of the Valencia racecourse earned him accolades from officials and spectators alike.
Rehbar, who aspires to lead in MotoGP racing, revealed, ‘I have been riding since I was six years old. I relate myself with speed as a way to go faster and the way it makes me happy when I am on the bike or I have more speed.’
Adding, “My first bike was a Honda CBR 150 which was custom made for my size when I was nine years old. I always feel free on the track, I enjoy freedom on the track where I can do anything with the bike though it has to be done in the right way.”
His journey into racing started at a tender age when he accompanied his father, Imtiyaz Sultan, a recognized rider, to racing tracks. Inspired by world-renowned MotoGP champions like Marc Marquez, Andrea Dovizioso, and Valentino Rossi, Rehbar’s passion for the sport grew, leading him to represent India in various championships, including Australia in March and then in other championships in Malaysia and Dubai.
Rehbar was selected to represent India in Spain in the world championship. He is currently competing in Guwahati.
“He has been invited to participate in these riding championships which is a great feeling indeed. “He would accompany me during my racing sessions. He races for TVS,” Rehbar’s father said.
Racing at speeds of up to 150 km per hour, Rehbar faces the challenges of one of the most expensive sports, requiring significant financial support. Despite the absence of a racing track in Kashmir, Rehbar’s father expressed pride and support for his son’s passion, stating, ‘He has got all the support from me. I am sure he will shine brighter and bring accolades for his country.’
Rehbar’s father mentioned that from a very young age, he constantly tinkered with cars and bikes, displaying a keen interest in this sport.
He stated, “From the day I got him a small pocket bike he has not looked back. He has taken it seriously and it has become love of his life now, this is what he wants to do. Chase the speed.”
With upcoming competitions on the horizon, Rehbar Islam Baktoo continues to chase his dream of speed and MotoGP glory.
