Srinagar, March 15: A rare laparoscopic kidney cancer surgery, usually done at tertiary care hospitals, was performed on Wednesday at district hospital Pulwama in south Kashmir and this is the first of its kind surgery conducted by any district hospital in Jammu and Kashmir.
The kidney cancer treatment surgery was performed by consultant urologist Dr Aashaq Hussain Bhat and his team at the district hospital Pulwama.
“Known as laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, it is a highly advanced and technically demanding procedure carried for stage 1 carcinoma (cancer that forms in epithelial tissue),” Dr Mir Mushtaq, spokesperson Directorate of Health Services Kashmir said.
He said this is the first of its type surgery that has been done in any district hospital of Jammu and Kashmir. As per doctors, usually such patients are referred to tertiary level hospitals where it consumes much time for patients.
Dr Aashaq said that CT showed a mid-polar renal cancer which needed this kind of surgery for the procedure.
The other doctors who were part of the team include Dr Iffat, Consultant Anaesthesia and Dr Shahzada Gani and assisted by Mehrajudin Reshi, Fancy Jan, Khursheed. The arrangements were supervised by Mohammad Shaban.
Dr Aashaq thanked DHSK and Medical Superintendent DH Pulwama for their supervision and guidance in conducting such surgeries at the hospital to avoid burden on patients.
