A woman delivered a dead infant after she was carried on a stretcher for four kilometers from Hallan to Manzgam in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district here on Saturday.

According to locals, the route from Manzgam to Hallan has been cleared of snow but is impassable till date.

A family member told Rising Kashmir that due to lack of motorable roads, they took the expecting woman from Hallan village to Manzgam hospital on the shoulders a day before.

“A pregnant lady, Sakeena Akhtar, wife of Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Hallan, was brought to hospital on shoulders and she delivered a dead baby,” Mohd Ishaq, a local said, adding that it took almost two hours to get to the hospital on foot.

The woman was moved from Manzgam to Damhal Hanji Pora Sub District Hospital, where she delivered a dead baby and was discharged on Saturday afternoon.

Surprisingly, she was discharged from hospital, and the family members and locals once again carried her home on their shoulders.

“We had to travel on a frigid road in slippers, which took a long time, and the time squandered in getting to the hospital has resulted in the loss of my female child,” laments Gulzar, the patient’s husband.

According to a health official, a patient was brought to Manzgam hospital from where she was taken to SDH Damhal and delivered a dead baby.

“The woman was brought by ambulance from Manzgam to SDH, where her baby died of natural causes,” says Gulzar Ahmad, BMO, D H Pora.

The official noted that the 102 ambulance service is available and that they may have been dropped off at a specific location due to a lack of road access.
