Jammu, March 22: After years of delays and uncertainty, the much-awaited Wangath receiving station in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district is finally set for commissioning by June 2025. The government confirmed that persistent Right of Way (RoW) issues, which had stalled the progress, have now been resolved, clearing the way for its completion.
The Wangath receiving station was sanctioned as part of the government’s broader initiative to strengthen power infrastructure in Ganderbal, a district that has long struggled with erratic electricity supply. Residents of Wangath and its neighbouring areas, particularly in Kangan, have endured frequent power cuts, voltage fluctuations and an overall unreliable energy network—especially during the harsh winter months when demand peaks.
Despite the project’s approval, work was repeatedly delayed due to land acquisition hurdles and RoW disputes, leaving locals frustrated. Mian Meher Ali, the MLA from Kangan, has been vocal about the issue, persistently urging the government to expedite construction. During the ongoing Assembly session, he once again pressed the government for an update, also questioning whether a higher-capacity transformer could be installed to meet the area’s growing electricity demands.
In response, the Power Development Department (PDD) clarified a misunderstanding regarding transformer capacity. Contrary to Meher Ali’s reference to a 330 KVA unit, the department confirmed that Wangath’s receiving station would be equipped with a significantly more powerful 3.15 MVA (3150 KVA) transformer. Meanwhile, Saloora—the other sanctioned receiving station in Ganderbal—would feature an even larger 6.3 MVA (6300 KVA) transformer.
With construction progressing steadily and bureaucratic hurdles finally addressed, officials are optimistic that both stations will be operational by June 2025. The Minister In-charge of PDD reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising Ganderbal’s power infrastructure, ensuring that residents benefit from improved supply and reduced outages.
For the people of Wangath and surrounding areas, this announcement offers a glimmer of hope. The commissioning of the receiving station is expected to bring much-needed relief, stabilising electricity supply and supporting local businesses, educational institutions, and daily life. While past delays have bred scepticism, the government’s renewed assurances suggest that Ganderbal’s long-standing power woes may finally be nearing an end.
