Srinagar, May 02: Doctors at Paras Health in Srinagar have successfully treated a life-threatening bleeding complication in a 22-year-old male patient, completing the entire procedure in just 14 minutes.
The hospital in a press release issued here said the patient had renal dysfunction and high blood pressure for which he had been visiting nearby clinics, but the underlying cause (Polyarteritis Nodosa) remained undiagnosed until the investigations including a renal biopsy done at Paras revealed disease process.
This case highlights the importance of comprehensive health assessments and the need for patients to seek medical attention for persistent symptoms like high blood pressure and renal dysfunction in young patients, it said.
The patient, a young college student, had been unknowingly living with underlying hypertension and vasculitis, predisposing him to renal dysfunction and severe bleeding risk. Despite his seemingly healthy lifestyle, the silent progression of his condition went unnoticed until his recent presentation to the nephrology department.
The patient presented to the nephrology department with deranged renal function, leading to a suspicion of underlying renal parenchymal disease, the hospital said, adding, “A renal biopsy was performed, but shortly after the procedure, the patient developed severe abdominal bleeding and a large hematoma around the kidney. Despite blood transfusions, the bleeding did not stop, prompting an emergency renal angiography. The patient was quickly transferred to the cath lab, where doctors performed an emergency renal angiography and embolization.”
Highlighting the case, Dr Irshad Ahmed Banday, Interventional Radiologist at Paras Health Srinagar, said, “The angiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm in a branch of the renal artery that was bleeding into the retroperitoneum. The bleeding was successfully treated with micro-coil embolization, a minimally invasive procedure done on the awake patient without the need for major anaesthesia and only with a small pinhole in the groin of the patient with the help of advanced medical hardware (catheters and micro-coils). The procedure was completed in only 14 minutes. The patient was stabilized and discharged after two days, with no further bleeding complications.”
He added, “In emergencies like these, every minute counts. Our ability to quickly diagnose and treat the patient’s condition in a minimally invasive manner significantly contributed to the successful outcome.”
The patient’s underlying conditions, including hypertension and vasculitis, had increased his risk of bleeding complications. However, the seamless collaboration between the nephrology and interventional radiology teams ensured a swift and successful resolution of the crisis.
“This case highlights the importance of having a highly skilled and coordinated medical team that can respond rapidly to complex emergencies,” said Dr Hilal Ahmad Malla of Nephrology Department, Paras Health Srinagar.
At Paras Health Srinagar, non-surgical, minimally invasive, scarless treatment of fibroids, varicose veins, thyroid nodules, and varicocele facilities in interventional radiology are helping patients in the regions nearby, the hospital said.
