Poonch, Jul 30: In a gesture of compassion and leadership, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has adopted 30 children from Poonch who lost one or both parents in the recent cross-border shelling by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.
This compassionate initiative was conceived and proposed by Fiaz Diwan, State Vice President of Youth Congress and a native of Poonch.
Having set up a relief camp during Operation Sindoor, Diwan said he was deeply moved by the plight of the affected families. “I wrote to the Congress high command, urging long-term support for these children. My proposal received swift approval from Rahul Gandhi and the national leadership,” he said.
On Wednesday, the Youth Congress organised an aid distribution event where each of the 30 children received a cheque of Rs 40,000. A commitment was announced to support their education up to Class 12, ensuring a brighter future for these young lives.
Uday Bhanu, National President of Youth Congress, expressed gratitude: “We are thankful to Rahul Gandhi and the party leadership for endorsing this initiative. The Youth Congress believes that the families of our brave martyrs deserve not only respect but also tangible support. Today, we stand with them, not just in grief, but in responsibility.”
Tariq Hamid Karra, President of J&K Congress, emphasised the importance of action during times of crisis: “In moments of tragedy, true leadership is demonstrated through deeds. Rahul Gandhi has once again shown that the Congress stands with the people, not only in words but through meaningful action to rebuild lives.”
The event was attended by prominent leaders, including Working President Raman Bhalla, AICC National Secretary Shahnawaz Choudhary, and JKPYC leaders. It was widely appreciated by the people of Poonch, who hailed it as a “historic moment” that exemplifies political accountability and human compassion.
“This initiative reaffirmed the Congress Party’s commitment to stand by the people during their most difficult times, demonstrating that actions speak louder than words,” Diwan said.
