Srinagar, Dec 17: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) chairman Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen on Tuesday expressed reservations over the One Nation-One Election (ONOE) proposal, which seeks to conduct simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly polls, followed by synchronised local body elections within 100 days. He cautioned that the proposal may undermine the fundamental principles of the Constitution by weakening the country’s federal structure.
In a statement issued here, Yaseen said various sections of society have expressed concerns regarding the risks associated with the ONOE proposal. “There should be a legally sustainable framework to align electoral cycles across the country in a practical and efficient manner,” he said.
Hakeem said that the challenges confronting the ONOE proposal are conceptual, financial, constitutional and logistical. “Implementing such an idea in a vast and diverse country like India—known for its rich cultural and topographical diversity—requires careful deliberation and planning,” he said.
The PDF chief urged the government not to move in haste on a matter with such far-reaching ramifications. “The One Nation-One Election Bill should be referred to a joint parliamentary select committee to arrive at a broader consensus,” he said. “While the proposal may have its merits, it must be approached with caution to ensure it does not compromise India’s federal structure or the spirit of the Constitution.”
