Upper reaches receive fresh snowfall, rains lash plains MeT predicts erratic weather till April 10 Srinagar admin issues advisory
Srinagar, Apr 03: As precipitation deficiency continued through March, the weatherman has issued yellow and orange alerts for Jammu and Kashmir till Saturday, predicting intermittent light to moderate rain and snow at many places with the possibility of thunder, hailstorm, and gusty winds.
A fresh Western Disturbance affected the region on Friday morning, bringing fresh snowfall to several upper reaches, including Razdan Pass, Sinthan Top, Pir Ki Gali, Sadhna Top, Margan Top, Gulmarg Phase-II, and the higher reaches of Sonamarg and Gurez. Intermittent rainfall lashed the plains across Jammu and Kashmir, bringing down temperatures across the region.
Rainfall Deficiency
According to details accessed by Rising Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a shortfall of 34 percent rainfall from March 1 to April 1, 2026, with the region receiving only 101.4 mm of precipitation against the normal of 154.6 mm.
The highest deficiency was recorded in Shopian district with a 74 per cent deficit, receiving only 30.9 mm of precipitation against a normal of 118.5 mm. Shopian was followed by Kathua with 62 per cent deficiency and Kulgam with 61 per cent deficiency. Srinagar recorded a shortfall of 24 per cent during the period.
Eleven other stations—Anantnag, Budgam, Bandipora, Doda, Jammu, Kishtwar, Kupwara, Pulwama, Ramban, Reasi, and Udhampur—witnessed deficit rainfall ranging between 20 per cent and 59 per cent. However, Samba and Poonch recorded excess rainfall of 35 per cent and 25 per cent above normal, respectively. Baramulla and Ganderbal recorded normal precipitation.
Forecast
Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, issued yellow and orange warnings for April 3 and 4, stating that erratic weather conditions are expected till April 10. Intermittent light to moderate rain and snow at many places, along with thunder, hailstorms, and gusty winds, are expected till the evening of April 4, with moderate to heavy rain and snow over higher reaches at a few places.
On April 5 and 6, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy with light rain at isolated places. Fresh spells of light to moderate rain and snow over higher reaches, along with thunder and gusty winds, are expected at many places from April 7 to 9. A brief spell of light rain and snow over higher reaches is expected at a few places on April 10 and 11, with generally dry weather expected from April 12 onwards.
Advisory
The MeT department has issued an advisory warning of possible thunder, hail, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at a few places on April 3, 4, 7, and 8. Intense heavy showers for brief periods may lead to flash floods, landslides at vulnerable places, and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Farmers have been advised to suspend all farm operations, and travellers have been advised to plan accordingly.
Srinagar administration advisory
The district administration Srinagar has advised residents to avoid unnecessary movement on roads except in case of absolute necessity. Tourists, local shikara walas, sand miners, and others operating in and around Dal Lake, River Jhelum, and other water bodies have been advised not to attempt crossing or operating without first verifying the prevailing conditions and safety status of these water bodies.
